Is Gracias a Dios Border Marker Neglected? That’s What the BTV Believes.

Is Gracias a Dios border marker neglected? That’s what the BTV believes. On the trip up the Sarstoon, the media made a quick stop where the BTV had planted mahogany trees back in 2013.  Wil Maheia told the media that the area should be better maintained.

“A few years ago, the BTV came here and did plant some mahogany tree directly on the border line and a few of those trees are still living. Again, this comes down to leadership that the military, who is stationed in this area, and I am not blaming the guys who are stationed on the ground here; I think the higher ups need to give the instructions to keep the monument clean – it is part of our heritage, it is part of our land mark and even the trail going there it can be a tourist attraction; maybe BTB should get involved. It is a beautiful river. We need to promote tourism on this river and that will bring economic benefits to the citizens of Barranco and Temash and other people who live on the coast line and for all the people to see this beautiful forest here. The monument is a very important part it shows where Belize starts and where Guatemala starts; so it divides us from Guatemala. And getting there is a really a challenge, I think something that is just fifteen minutes’ walk from where we at, the challenge that one has to go through to get to the monument is disheartening. And again, this comes to show the leadership in the B.D.F.  I hope that General Jones is listening, because you have a very important Gracias A Dios, one of only three monuments in this country and if we can’t keep that clean, how will we expect to keep our border lines clean?

totally agree, our leaders and the military heads should coordinate monthly operations so have it is well kept and more presence of our people there will help detour guats coming in to rape our beautiful jungle.
