Bangladeshi Businessman Murdered at Home

Abdush Salam

A Bangladeshi national who operates a small business was strangled to death over the weekend. This afternoon police confirmed the cause of death after the nude body of Abdush Salam was found in his apartment by a roommate on Saturday afternoon.  The motive behind the murder is not ascertained even though it is believed it may have been a crime of passion.  Salam’s body was found face down on his bed with his handed tied behind his back. The last time he was seen alive was at around one-thirty on Saturday. Hours later, when he did not answer calls, his roommate made the gruesome discovery. Police are looking for one person seen leaving the apartment.  News Five’s Duane Moody reports.

The first murder for the month of July was recorded on Saturday night in Belize City. Just after six p.m. police were called out to an apartment on Orange Street. Inside a room on the second floor of the building, they discovered the nude body of Bangladeshi national twenty-nine-year-old Abdush Salam. Salam was face down on his bed with his hands bound with a belt behind his back. While there were no signs of injury on the body, police say he was murdered.

Supt. Alejandro Cowo, O.C., CIB, Belize City

“The police checked the room and everything and nothing was stolen from inside of the room. There was no forced entry into the apartment itself. The persons that were living likewise with the deceased were interviewed and statements have been recorded from them so far.”

It was Shamiul Amin Torofdar that discovered the body of his housemate on his arrival at home that Saturday night. According to Torofdar, in the two years that the four housemates have been in the apartment, Salam invited several men to his room.

“Once I got home, my key that I always have here, I open my door…I feel like somebody already opened it. I just opened it regularly; I didn’t pay it mind, but I feel like something happen. I turn on my light and I see my rice pot is already spoil….done smell bad. I try to clean this rice and then I see which part he lives, his room, I see like something miserable or terrible.  Then I gone and I feel like everything is messed up. I never see him again in there. And then I see the bed like leg side bruk up and break it. I feel like somebody fight with him or something like that. Break it and tied his hand from behind with a belt, like a regular belt and totally naked.”

According to the investigation, Salam left his shop located inside the Novelo’s Bus Terminal on Collet Canal around one-thirty p.m. that day and headed home for lunch. His killer reportedly entered the apartment with him as surveillance cameras in the area captured a man exiting the entrance to the upper flat sometime around four-thirty p.m., about three hours later. That man was seen frequenting the apartment with the deceased. Police say they have a description and a name. So was Salam killed by an enraged lover?

“He worked there until sometime after one, one-thirty and he left there. That was the last time that he was seen alive. We have other information that we will be following up at this time, but we cannot disclose the names of the person that we suspect at this moment.  We have interviewed the tenants and they are assisting with the investigation. They had given a description more or less of a person that was seen leaving from the building sometime after four on that Saturday. There was no bruises or any physical violence that you could observe on the body. We suspect that he was maybe strangled or choked to death.”

In the seventeen plus years that Bangladesh nationals have been living in Belize, this is the first recorded murder of one of their own. The community is asking for justice as they prepare to either transport his body back home or carry out funeral services here in Belize.

“Our plan is to send his dead body to Bangladesh…it is depending on the family. If the family agrees to send his dead body to Bangladesh, we will try our best to send it. We are trying to get money from our community or his family, if they can help with something. And whatever he has, his property, we will try to find those properties and sell it and whatever we get, the rest of money after ticket, we send [to his] family. According to our Muslim religion, where we are dead, before the twenty-four hours, we have to bury him anywhere he dead, same place you bury him. It depends sometimes if the family wants to see his face.”
