Mom forgives Akeem Guzman’s killer but wants to know why
Police are looking, but no one has been detained for the murder of twenty-one year old San Ignacio resident, Akeem Guzman. Guzman was shot once to the back by a masked man on Sunday morning as he visited with a friend at a house off Flamingo Avenue. He was rushed to the San Ignacio Community Hospital, but died within hours. A postmortem conducted on the youth on Monday afternoon confirms that the cause of death was trauma to his chest and abdomen. Guzman’s lungs and kidney were damaged and according to his mother, he could not have survived the attack. But Geraldine Jones says that she has more questions than answers in the murder of her eldest son.
Geraldine Jones, Mother of Akeem Guzman
“My concern is I wasn’t to know the distance, the light because like what the young man told me, he was sitting on the steps; my son was not too far from him sitting on a crate. And all he saw was someone short, slim, in dark clothing and a mask. And all he said was Akeem, gun. And by the time he said gun, all her heard was bow. My son ran a distance and he asked him Akeem did you get hit and he said yes and started shouting out in agony from the pain. And his mom called the police and they came and they took him to the hospital where he succumbed to his injuries. Never, never imagined….you know he asked the time and his brother told him exact twelve o’clock. And so I told him go home and he said Mom, I’m going. I’ll stop at the Chiney, pick up two cigarettes and I’m going home. To know that I sent him home and for them to do this to him. Akeem wasn’t no saint; if you wanted to kill him, like let him be alert. Akeem stand up, turn around and see who I am. Don’t just shoot him in the back, sitting; that’s coward. If I had an opportunity to see the person or they see me here doing this interview, what I would tell them is I forgive you.”
