Southside the Big Winners at Police Sports Day

Police Week culminates on Saturday with a parade through the principal streets of Belize City. The march is a spectacle with many features, including a clear distinction of the different units within the department. Passing the Supreme Court of Belize, a salute will be given to Belize City Mayor Darrell Bradley, who will be joined by Commissioner of Police Allen Whylie at the steps of the courthouse. But even before that event, today, officers from the various units attached to the north and south sides converged on the Yabra Green for a day of sporting activities, including basketball, volleyball as well as dominoes and cards. ACP Chester Williams says the sports day is a stress-reliever for the cops.

“Our sports day began at five thirty this morning where we had a track and field between north and south side and that went well. Obviously, south side was the winner; south side got first, second and third place and north side got fourth place. Now we are having basketball, we have dominos and cards game and volleyball as you can see in the background. And these are some of the sports that we are playing today and we have the impending match between the police and the media, but for some reason we are seeing that the media is trying to chicken out. We are looking forward to playing the media. We are hoping that they bring out their skilled players like Jules Vasquez, Mike Rudon, Louis Wade, Orson Picart, Isani Cayetano…we want them to come out. It is a day that we want to have fun with the media. Police is a high stressed job and often time it is just work, work, work, work and there is no time for fun. Me, for one, I have fun everyday…even at work I have fun. But other officers need that chance that we can mingle among ourselves, have fun together and at the same time meet the public and have fun with the public. By so doing, you let out stress as well. Sports is one of the best way to decrease your stress level and so we believe that this sports day today is only healthy for police officers to partake in and to see how they can release some of the stress that they have.”
