Will New CitCo Restrictions Cost Revenue on Barracks Party Strip?

The Barracks area has been the site of many outdoor concerts featuring local and international artists and music accompanies many events in the area. But following concerns raised by residents about noise at a public meeting on Wednesday, select bars and night clubs face new restrictions from the Belize City Council. An internal memo leaked to the press today sets out the new regulations, which could cause substantial loss of revenue for these well-known and frequented establishments. First, no extensions for liquor licenses, per the law, will be granted to establishments that are not sound-proofed. Pickwick Club must sound-proof its establishment in order to continue operating under a nightclub license, as promised to the Council. The Council plans to begin enforcing noise abatement laws to keep noise in the area to a minimum, having already stopped music playing at the B.T.L. Park.  And finally, the Hour Bar Field will be prohibited from getting “special licenses” for outdoor concerts up to four a.m. due to not having a sound-proofed area.
