Governing U.D.P. City Councilors to vie again for City Hall

The Municipal Elections are coming up next year and the U.D.P. is getting in gear in Belize City where it has been controlling city hall since 2006. Today, majority of the current U.D.P. City Councilors went in to the headquarters to submit their application for the March 2018 elections. Darrell Bradley who has been Mayor for two terms has already indicated that he will be seeking re-election, and it is no secret that the Mayor and his councilors haven’t always seen eye to eye. But when we spoke with Councillor Dion Leslie today he told us that they are solid and united and are all running under one ticket for the U.D.P. Here’s what he had to say about their bid to get back on the ticket U.D.P. slate for the elections.

Dion Leslie, Councillor, Belize City Council

Dion Leslie

“This morning, myself, along with 7 other of my colleagues, two were missing, namely Alifah Elrington and Philip Willoughby. But we are still together as a unit, as the ten incumbents but only eight of us were able to make it this morning. We went into the UDP Secretariat and we officially handed in our application basically saying we will seek to represent the UDP for the 2018 Municipal Elections for Belize City.”

Andrea Polanco

“With Alifah and Philip missing, is this an indication that they are not interested in re-contesting?”

Dion Leslie

“No. Not at all. As I said the ten incumbents we are all together and they just couldn’t make it in this morning and I believe Alifah had prior engagements and Philip was on Krem. And so they are not able to make it and they are still sticking strong the ten of us together. I believe it can be said without any doubt, under the leadership of Darrell Bradley as the Mayor, us, the ten councilors, we have seen a transformation within the city that cannot be matched with probably within the next hundred years – thatwould be easy to say.”

Andrea Polanco

“Is there any expectation that there will be other persons submitting application?”

Dion Leslie

“Definitely. The history has shown that a seat for the UDP City Council is probably one of the most coveted municipal seat in the country and you look at the past three conventions, this is going to be my fourth, and you will see that we have had at no time less than fifteen people vying for a seat and we don’t expect it to be any different this year; it may be over fifteen, sixteen, maybe even twenty people vying for seats. But we are hoping that with the ten of us incumbents sticking together, coming together, people will say you know what it is not broken – they have worked and let us give them another chance, another run. If not, we go back to the voters and have them decide if they still want us there or not.”

The cutoff date for applications for individuals interested in offering themselves for consideration on the U.D.P. ticket is next Friday.
