Police, family stumped over killing in Santa Elena Town

Maynor Portillo

There was further bloodshed in the west on Friday night. Hours before the murder of Emy Guerra, twenty-two-year old Maynor Portillo was found shot to the head near the Convention Center in Santa Elena. Police are still trying to piece together what led to the killing of the young man. Andrea Polanco has more.

On Friday around 8 in the night, twenty year old Maynor Portillo left his home on his bike after having dinner with his family. He didn’t say where he was going – and his family never saw him alive again. That’s because he was shot and killed here on the grounds of the abandoned Convention Center in Santa Elena Town. Shortly after nine, Police were called out after reports of gunshot in the area:

ASP Daniel Iche, San Ignacio Police Formation

ASP Daniel Iche

“At the eastern end of the building, the motionless body of a person identified as Maynor Leonel Portillo, twenty years of the Bradley’s Bank area, Santa Elena Town, was found in a sitting position leaning on the wall of a building with apparent gunshot wound to the head. The scene was processed and he was transported to the San Ignacio Community Hospital where he was pronounced dead on arrival.”

The Portillo family says they only knew Maynor as an easy going young man, but theu didn’t know if he had any problems out in the streets. Police say they are still investigating this Santa Elena murder but can’t say what the motive is and are asking the public’s assistance to solve the town’s latest homicide:

ASP Daniel Iche

“We have not established a motive. Our investigators are actively pursuing the investigation. We have questioned several persons. I am requesting the public’s assistance if they saw anything to come forward and let us know so that we can solve that murder.”

“Do you have any suspects?”

ASP Daniel Iche

“We have persons in custody whom we have questioned but nothing substantial gathered.”

While Portillo has had a drug related arrest in his past, Police wouldn’t say if there is a connection to his murder. The Portillo family said that Maynor’s bike and cell phone were not found. They declined comment today saying that they are fearful that they may be targeted.
