Who wanted Jorge Lemus of Unitedville dead?

Jorge Lemus

The family of fifty-two-year old Jorge Lemus is trying to come to terms with his untimely death. His body was found in a drain in the village of Unitedville in the west. But tonight, the cause of his death remains under investigation though the Lemus family believes he was robbed, killed and then discarded in the drain.  The body of the fifty-two-year old was found with an injury to the face and a knife was found not far away on Saturday. The last time Lemus was seen alive was on Friday around midnight and that was at a bar which he frequented. News Five’s Isani Cayetano reports.

The discovery of a body, found lying face down in this ditch on Saturday morning, has family and friends of fifty-two-year-old Jorge Lemus puzzled.  The Unitedville resident was last seen by his brother on Friday night, after leaving their mother’s house sometime around nine o’clock.

Victor Lemus, Brother of Deceased

“Bout round afta eight, I gaan to my ma house and when I mi deh by my ma house he reach deh bout round nine.  He reach deh and ih gaan deh and ih noh tek long, maybe only bout ten minutes he stayed there and then gaan back.”

Where Jorge returned to, upon leaving his mother’s house, is anyone’s guess.  The next time Victor Lemus would see his younger sibling was to identify his remains inside a nearby drain.

Victor Lemus

“Saturday morning dehn call me, I receive wahn call from my sister and she told me that dehn find out that my bredda deh eena wahn drain and ih look like ih dead ih tell me.  But she noh sure ih seh because dehn just call she and tell ahn and well I gaan to see what happened and when I come out outta road I see lotta people around by the culbert.  And well I mi think that ih mi more far but when I come out I see wahn lotta people around so I stop deh and I gaan see weh di happen.  Then I see the body of my bredda eena wah pool of water.”

According to San Ignacio police whose jurisdiction within the Cayo District extends to Unitedville, Lemus’ body was observed with an injury to the face.

“He was seen with a bruise to the left eye.  He was transported to the Western Regional Hospital where he was pronounced dead on arrival.”

Andrea Polanco

“Is foul play suspected in this particular incident?”

Daniel Iche

“We are investigating the matter.  We are recording statements from persons who saw him.  We have learnt that he visited a liquor establishment sometime after midnight that night and that was the last sighting of him.”

Corroborating that statement, the brother of the deceased mason also mentions that Lemus, described as a heavy drinker, was last seen by other villagers in the area of that unnamed establishment.

Victor Lemus

“He used to like drink wahn lot, because sometimes I talk to he and my ma used to talk to he that that bad and sometimes late hours da night he deh pan di street. I neva know that if he drop by ihself ih drop deh, maybe ih get drunk and drop deh and drowned.  But weh I notice is that di pool neva deep.  So then afterwards people find di slippers ova da side ah road.  Dehn find ih slippers and wahn knife, wahn knife without handle. According to the person from the bar, ih explain to me that he left from deh bout afta twelve and di lee money weh ih mi got, he mi di count money and so some people mi deh round and I seh well that bad because people mi di watch and see weh mi di happen.  To me ih look like maybe somebody sih he that ih got ih lee money so dehn follow he from deh because he mi deh by ihself because nobody neva deh wid he.”

The family strongly believes that their loved one was attacked, fatally injured and then dragged across the highway before being disposed of near an adjacent culvert.  Police, on the other hand, are awaiting the outcome of an autopsy before proceeding with their investigation.

Daniel Iche

“We are waiting on the post mortem results to confirm what caused his death.”
