Ministry of Health and Customs working out plans for pharmaceutical importation

Colin Griffith

The Ministry of Health recently announced that it will take over all processing for importation of pharmaceuticals into Belize. Considering past problems involving the drug inspectorate it seems a strange move. But the Customs and Excise Department, which also has a role to play in safe importation of these goods into the country, has been meeting with the Ministry and today Comptroller Colin Griffith indicated that there should be no hiccups for brokers and importers.

Colin Griffith, Comptroller of Customs

“I can say just Friday, we had a meeting with the Ministry of Health and previous to the meeting in the same room we had a meeting with importers and brokers in regards to the same thing and the ministry has informed us that next week they will be having a general meeting with importers and brokers in respect that.”

“So are you able to share what concerns the ministry may have with this? What did you understand the ministry’s concern was in regards to this importation?”

Colin Griffith

“I think it would be best that a question like that be…that the ministry respond to that. We recognize what they want to do but in customs we are very much concern in having goods release improved and that is why we got involved in the discussion from the meeting we had on Friday I do believe that it will be done effectively.”
