Belize government officials converge for Green Climate Fund meeting

This morning in Placencia, representatives of various ministries within the Government of Belize convened a Green Climate Fund conference. G.C.F. is a fund established within the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change. It is used to assist developing countries in adaptation and mitigation practices to counter climate change and its objective is to support projects, programs, policies and other activities. On hand for the opening of the conference was Ambassador Yvonne Hyde, National Designated Authority of Belize.

“On behalf of the government and people of Belize it is my pleasure to extend a warm welcome to all the participants who are here to take part in this regional structured dialogue. For those who came from afar, Belize is blessed with a natural beauty of lush forests, vibrant coral reefs and rich estuaries and  I hope that you enjoy the natural beauty of our country and the warmth of our people during your stay here. I also offer my appreciation for all of those who work tirelessly to make this event a success. Ladies and gentlemen the twenty- eight small islands and low lying coastal developing states of the Caribbean boast a rich a diverse heritage that is closely linking to the natural resources spanning the beautiful Caribbean island of Jamaica to the lush forest of Belize, Suriname and Guyana. That heritage is under threat from causes that are far beyond our control and increasingly threatening to our capacity to cope. Like the fellow minister from Barbados, Grenada, Jamaica, St. Vincent and the Grenadine, our people are facing the daunting reality of eroding shore line, increasing water tables, changing rainfall patterns and bleached coral reefs. Yet in spite of these circumstances and our threatened resources, as leaders we have been hard pressed to assure every person under our watch, the basic needs of sustainable livelihoods and we have by our own means endeavored to do so. Adaptation has been all but a way of life in the Caribbean; similarly low carbon growth has been pursued regionally. Long before it was evident that this was the only way to address climate disruption. At the regional level our heads of state and government had the foresight to create a regional center for climate change which is now proudly hosted as the Caribbean Community Climate Change Center, 5 Cs as we all know.”

It is intended that the Green Climate Fund be the focus of efforts to raise climate finance and raise one hundred billion dollars a year by 2020.
