Mek Mi Rich Litigants Face October Appeal

Andre Vega and Sanjay Hotchandani, co-owners of the “Mek Mi Rich” game show were back in court on Thursday. Businessman Curtis Swasey contended in 2015 that it was his original idea of using texting to conduct a lottery, and was in negotiation with Belize Telemedia Limited for development of what became the show. But it was Vega and Hotchandani’s conception that made it to Belizean television airwaves, prompting Swasey to sue. In February of 2016, Supreme Court Justice Courtney Abel found that persons within the telephone company breached confidentially agreement that they signed. But when it came to damages, the court could only find twenty-five thousand dollars to pay Swasey on the basis that Mek Mi Rich’s financial information was not available. Dissatisfied with the judgment, both sides appealed to the Court of Appeal, and on Thursday, a case management conference was held. The Court will hear the case in October during its final session for this year. We hear more from Swasey’s attorney, Kareem Musa.

“There are actually three appeals which have been consolidated before the court of appeal. The first of course comes from my client, Mr. Curtis Swasey, who feels like the damages that were awarded to him of twenty-five thousand dollars were not sufficient and therefore he is appealing the quantum and it is hoped that at the Court Of Appeal level, he will get a higher award in damages for the breach of confidence, because as you would recall this was an instance where B.T.L. and the allegation is by Mr. Swasey that B.T.L. and MMR Belize limited partnered together to use his ideas and in fact breeched his confidence. So, this is a claim that stems from that, interestingly enough though MMR Belize limited who my client was accusing of using his idea has not appealed so it is questionable why B.T.L. even followed through with this appeal in the first place but I think it has to do with the fact that they are the ones who ended up having to pay the twenty-five thousand dollars.”

“Have they indicated that, or do you have any idea at least why they are appealing?”

Kareem Musa

“They are not satisfied with the Supreme Court decision, they do feel that this is Mr. Swasey’s idea, the lottery texting is not Mr. Swasey’s idea, and so they are not satisfied with the judgment handed down by the honorable Justice Abel and therefore they are appealing.”
