China Plotting Strategy, but Will Not Offer Something for Nothing

Charles Liu

And while Ambassador Charles Liu remains positive and hopeful about the ties with Belize, we asked him if there is any concern that China, with its big coffers, will come knocking on other doors in Central America, particularly countries that rely heavily on foreign aid.  Liu believes China’s move was strategic and that while they may offer something to developing countries, they are usually getting something in return and he reminds Belize of the cost of that kind of relationship.

Charles Liu, Taiwanese Ambassador to Belize

“As far as I can see, we take the example of Panama – when China come there must be some incentive so that China can come in. But I see, in Panama, I think they have strategical positions or strtegical commercial interest over Laos. And one thing I want to remind our Belizean friends is that our Government, Taiwan Government, eight years ago we adopt open China policies. During that time, in the first years there are only less than ten thousand Chinese live in Taiwan legally, but after eight years, of Open China policy right now there are more than six hundred thousand Chinese living legally in Taiwan. So, I don’t know – what happens if Chinese comes flooding into Belize? Right now I think Belize is only 380,000 people. And then suddenly in eight years there are six hundred thousand Chinese come over here. And then probably you will see Chinese minister; or Chinese Prime Minister – I don’t think these are things that Belize people want to see and of course I don’t want to see let it happen.”

  1. Bob says:

Would be the best thing that ever happened to Belize.
I wish we could have a couple hundred thousand chinese in Belize.
I wish we had a chinese PM and ministers.

Then things would run smoother, economic prosperity would return, common sense and these robber ministers would be arrested.
You guys talk like everything so perfect now and the chinese some kind of threat. I dint see them bring any hardship like these jokers in government now.
