More Tomorrow’s Jeremy Parham Charged in Murder of Omar Barahona

Jeremy Parham

The murder of twenty-one-year-old Omar Barahona Junior shocked the Cotton Tree residents and surrounding communities in the Cayo District.  Last Saturday, Barahona Junior was shot and killed as he attended a farewell party in his honour.  According to the family, he was getting ready to leave for the U.S. on June seventeenth – a trip that he was looking forward to. He was at his aunt’s house in the village and was talking with a cousin and twenty-year-old Devon Brooks when a man came up and fired several shots; seven of which caught Barahona Junior and one hit Brooks in the leg.  It is believed that the bullets were meant for Brooks. When we spoke with Belmopan Police earlier this week they indicated that Brooks was not cooperating with the Police.  They were however able to gather enough information to look for a suspect. On Wednesday, they picked up twenty-three-year-old Jeremy Parham of More Tomorrow Village, who was fingered in an ID parade as the shooter.  Parham was taken to the Belmopan Magistrate Court today where he was arraigned for murder, use of deadly means of harm and wounding. His case was adjourned until August thirtieth and he was remanded. When we spoke with Barahona Senior, he said that they didn’t believe the gunman was from the village and neither was he someone they knew.

“No. We don’t know who it was. I cannot say. I really don’t know.”

“Do you believe it was someone from the village?”

Omar Barahona Sr.

“I don’t think so because we are all villagers and I don’t think he is from the village. My son doesn’t have any problem from the village. It got to be someone that is not from there because once they know my son they wouldn’t do that to my son.”

So, what caused the fatal shooting? Best information to News Five indicates that Brooks, who is known to the Police, was involved in a recent robbery in the west and that his partners in the crime were not satisfied when the proceeds which they netted were not evenly shared.
