No Change in Belize’s Taiwan Policy

Patrick Faber

On Monday, Panama severed diplomatic relations with the Republic of China (Taiwan) and in the same breath it announced it was establishing ties with the People’s Republic of China. President Carlos Varela said he believes in a one China policy and that there are strong economic interests with China which is the second most important customer of the Panama Canal. The Government of Taiwan issued a statement saying that they had closed their mission in that country. But will there be a trickle-down effect on the five other countries in Central America who maintain relations with Taiwan and is China courting Belize? Today the DPM responded to that query.

Patrick Faber, Deputy Prime Minister

“Well I don’t know of any formal courting that’s being done, but you do hear these things from time to time. But as far as I know, and in fact we discussed this matter as recent as this week in Cabinet, Belize is firm with the Taiwanese people and government and we don’t anticipate that kind of change happening anytime now.”
