Spend Less on Tourism, More on Culture

Yasser Musa

According to Musa, it is difficult for Belizean artists and musicians to appreciate their worth and talent locally when there is more focus on tourism rather than culture.

Yasser Musa, Former President, NICH

“You ask any farmer what it is they are doing with this land, the land and the sea; yes we understand those things, but we do not understand our intangible worth, our intangible heritage….what makes us people, what makes us Belizeans and what gives us an identity. And it is through art that we manifest this identity. So it is absurd that we are spending so much in other areas like tourism. We should be spending more on culture than tourism. Tourism should be a small speck under the concept of culture. It is the people development and the people’s identity that should come and drive this vehicle because the little investment and you see how many people want to come and experience our culture. And as you said rightly, look how much people outside recognize this—whether it is Verge of Umbra, who gonna soon perform in Germany, or whether it was Andy Palacio, who performed dah di world stage, or Paul Nabor or many others from the seventies…I can go back with Lord Rhaburn and so. That the inherent value of a society is in its creativity and its people to generate the products and the instruments of creativity.”
