Ex-Prez of F.F.B. Calls for ‘Fair Play’ Ahead of Election

Sergio Chuc

There is more tonight to the ongoing battles within the Football Federation of Belize. On Monday, you heard Sergio Chuc who has been disqualified from seeking elections as president, call on delegates to stay away from the June twenty-fourth elections. The F.F.B. Electoral Appeals Committee barred Chuc from running following allegations of bribery, corruption, conflict of interest and attaining advantage in seeking the office of presidency. The complaint against Chuc was made by former president, Ruperto Vicente, who is also seeking the presidency. Vicente has complained that the donations Chuc has made to the teams of the Premier Football League are a form of bribery as stipulated in the FIFA Code of Ethics and Discipline, which states that the giving and receiving of gifts amounts to bribery and corruption in football. Vicente spoke to the press today, saying he alerted the executives of the federation to caution Chuc to recall the gifts he had given to teams.

“It is unfortunate that these things happen, but my action…I did not know it would have led to all of this. But when I saw what was happening; that is Mister Chuc distributing uniforms to all the PLB teams, it alerted me and immediately ran a bell in my mind and so I wrote a letter to the General Secretary of the Federation to give to the executive of the federation, alerting them about the danger of giving these gifts. And not just by an ordinary person, but by someone who will contest the elections for the presidency of the Football Federation of Belize. What that does is that one, I cited that it would put all other candidates at a disadvantage and in football; fair play is the name of the game. If you give someone a gift or a voting member of a gift, then it means that you would have secured those votes for yourself. Where does that leave me? Where does that leave the other candidates? It leaves you at a disadvantage.”
