Panama Ditches Taiwan for People’s Republic of China

Before we go to break, in foreign policy news…Panama has officially severed all diplomatic ties with the Republic of Taiwan, as of Monday and established relations with the People’s Republic of China. Immediately, Taiwan announced it was closing its embassy in that country and recalling its technical mission.  It also ended all bilateral cooperation and aid programs.  In a curt statement, the Taiwanese government takes umbrage to the manner in which Panama went about its change of allegiance, leaving Taiwan, “in the dark about its decision until the final moments.” This means that only twenty countries comprising of Central America, the Caribbean and Africa now hold relations with Taiwan. In the region, it is only Belize, Guatemala, Honduras, Salvador and Nicaragua who remain with Taiwan.  President Carlos Varela addressed the nation on Monday about the issue saying he always believed in the one China policy.

Ungrateful stupid leader. But does he want to make Panama a communist country? Taiwan has been very friendly with Central America and always there in the bad moments. I hope that we appreciate what Taiwan has done for Belize, especially in education. Taiwan is one of our BEST friends, lets keep up together.
