Police Want to Charge ‘Rioting’ Chunox Villagers

Before we go to break…in respect of the shooting death of Richard Garcia in Chunox, Senior Superintendent Arnold also told us today that Garcia had chances to leave the property peacefully, but instead attempted to injure cops with a machete. In the end the tenant would be left dead and the community would lash out against the responding officers.  While the incident is under investigation as a possible riot, the top cop says that if there is any evidence found to lay charges, they would be filed against the residents.

Dennis Arnold

Sr. Supt. Dennis Arnold, O.C., Corozal Police

“Somewhere – I guess it was after six when night was coming in, the Scenes of Crime officers went out there along with other officers, because the crowd was riled up – as soon as dark set, they started stoning the officers and they had to take cover; they left everything there; they left the Scenes of Crime kit – they took that [and] I don’t know where it is now. They had injured several officers – they stoned them with stones, mangoes, bricks, bottles, you name it; in that incident we had five officers get injured. And I would just like to explain that if officers are able to identify any of these people who were stoning them – I understand it was about a hundred and fifty villagers out there – but if the officers can identify any of them who were stoning, I guess they can be picked up and charged for harm, theft, riotous behaviour; disorderly conduct.”
