Jerson Carballo Attacked on Way Home

Jerson Carballo

In the Saint Martin De Porres area of the city on Monday night, the life of Jerson Carballo was snuffed out and police have no motive or suspect. Carballo had left the house of his cousins and was riding home when he was ambushed after midnight by a gunman who followed him. His sister, artist Ernestine Carballo, and other family members are reeling from the murder of the twenty-seven-year-old who wasn’t known to be a trouble maker.  It is believed he was listening to music on headphone when he was executed. News Five’s Isani Cayetano reports.

Belizean entertainer Ernestine Carballo, on the eve of releasing new music, is mourning the death of a loved one.  Her younger sibling, twenty-seven-year-old Jerson Carballo, an employee of the Radisson Fort George Hotel, was heading home around midnight on Monday when he was met with a hail of bullets.  His assailant seemingly pursued him and struck from behind, unleashing as many as seven shots in his direction.

“He just left from our house when we hyah di gunshots and I tell my friend, ah seh Jerson just leff from ya and gunshot.  I hope da noh Jerson get shot.  She seh I hope not too.  So I tell ahn gyal mek we go check it, but when we peep through di back window nobody neva deh out fi seh well somebody get shot.  So my friend tell me I nih gwein out deh because I fraid di gunman still deh out deh.”

They both hesitated.  It wasn’t until a police vehicle came upon the scene that Jerson’s relative and her friend came out to investigate what had happened.

“Around twelve-thirty this morning, police visited the corner of Electric Avenue and Lawrence Avenue where the lifeless body of Jerson Carballo, he’s twenty-seven-years-old of a McKay Boulevard address, was seen with a gunshot wound to the chest and the back.  His bicycle was found at the scene and the initial investigation is that he left a residence on Ring Road heading home and subsequently shots were heard and his body was found at the scene.”

Moments later, the women would emerge from their home only to discover that Jerson was lying motionless a short distance away.

“When we reach deh I sih Jerson pan di ground but I neva know that da he.  So I ask di police, ah seh could please flash yo light mek ah sih da who, if da mi cousin deh down ya pan di ground.  So when I look, di police flash ih light and when I look I sid da he and all weh I coulda mi do da jump up and seh Jesus Christ , he just done leff from fu we house.”

According to elder sister Ernestine, her sibling was blindsided by his attacker, as he may have been listening to music while riding his bicycle on the way home.

“Somebody rode up from behind because when I saw him on the ground he had on his headphone so he didn’t know at all that this was coming to him.  He didn’t even know or didn’t expect that that this would happen to him where they would take his life so shortly, so unexpectedly, so suddenly.”

“Now this particular neighborhood has seen its share of crime and violence recently.  Do you believe that it may have either been his association to some of the individuals who live in this area?”

Ernestine Carballo

“Not to my knowledge, not to any of our knowledge because, you know, he was very churchgoing.  Home to work and do his lee deejaying with, like I said, DJ Bones, with assisting, you know, fu bring the speakers and so forth.  And, you know, after that he got his job and he was working double shift so he didn’t really have any time to socialize or anything.”

While Jerson may not have had time to meet people or go out, he was working extremely late, which meant that he was often seen riding his bicycle late at night en route to his home on the canal side.

Sgt. Roberto Novelo

“Nothing to indicate that it’s a gang-related [incident].  He was not known to the police to be affiliated to any gang. We found four, point forty-five expended shells at the scene.”

The loss for the Carballo family is shocking.  All Ernestine is seeking is simply a sense of finality.

Ernestine Carballo

“All I need and my family needs at this time is closure to this case.  So I’m pleading to my Lake-I community and Belizean people that if you all ever hear or know anything then please take it to the nearest police station.  I mean nobody deserves this, I don’t even wish this on my worst enemy.  Nobody deserves for their life to be taken away that God has given onto them.”
