Harvest Caye for All – Even FECTAB

Over the weekend, we caught up with Minister Manuel Heredia Junior on South West’s Inaugural Flight to Belize. Now, prior to opening up a small market for local tour operators to ferry cruise passengers from Harvest Caye to mainland Placencia, there had been disquiet within the sector.  That uneasiness came in part from FECTAB.  The organization cried foul when Norwegian Cruise Lines relocated its operations from the Fort Street Tourism Village in Belize City to its own private island off the Placencia Peninsula.  Its bone of contention was that visitors were not being allowed to leave the island for tours to other parts of the country.  That changed last Tuesday when the Placencia pier was officially opened for tourists to be transported to and from the exclusive island.  We asked Heredia Junior for a brief comment on the latest developments at Harvest Caye.

Manuel Heredia Jr., Minister of Tourism

“The local Belizeans, particularly those that were against the project, are now seem to be realizing that it’s something good for the south.  The southern people do appreciate what is happening because our artists, artisans are getting more jobs.  Local cruise operators, different cruise operators are also getting more jobs and you are finding that with the assistance of B.T.B. we have been lobbying to the Norwegian Cruise Lines to allow Placencia, they will be getting two to three hundred of the cruise people whenever the cruise ships arrive and we will be working with the other sectors, including FECTAB.  I believe that it is a team work and rather than quarrelling we are supposed to be coming together and see how we can approach the issues and I believe that that is the only way we can move forward.”
