Guatemalan Fined Over False Documents

Lazaro Rafael Zaldivar Lopez

Guatemalan national Lazaro Rafael Zaldivar Lopez has yet to pay a fine of three thousand dollars and remains in prison over the weekend. He changed a plea of not guilty to a single count of possession of a false document to guilty before Magistrate Carlon Mendoza. On May twenty-fourth, Lopez was found with a Social Security card in the name of Delsi Nunez, carrying Lopez’s picture. But it turns out that according to the Vital Statistics Unit, Nunez is still alive and Lopez, a fisherman of Hondo Street, had been duped into accepting fake Belizean documents for one thousand, five hundred dollars which he had been using since 2005. Lopez had visited the Belize City office of the Board to renew his card but ran straight into a fraud alert when it was run through the system and police were called in. Ironically, the real Delsi Nunez had been doing the same at the Belmopan office. Lopez said he never asked the name of the man whom he said he got the documents from. The Magistrate ordered immediate payment of the fine as he deemed Lopez a flight risk and further charges are expected against him. Attorney Bryan Neal represented Lopez.
