BERT Gives Residents Tips for Emergencies

Javier Canul

The official authorities have been very handy for tips to Belizeans to have a safe and happy Easter weekend. Earlier this week, we had the point of view of chief emergency medical technician for the Belize Emergency Response Team, Javier Canul, who will be hoping not to have anything to do on this long weekend. But knowing better, he delivered this list of advice in his own inimitable style.

Javier Canul, Chief of Training, BERT

“Since it’s the Easter vacation, I would just want to give some words of caution and some words of advice to people all over the country. [If] they are traveling on the highways, they need to make sure that they stay off their cell phone – it’s important that you stay off the cell phone till you reach where you are going. Make sure you don’t drink and drive; if you are drinking someone else should take care. If you drink, don’t go to swim. And if you swim, don’t go by yourself. The weather is very hot these days and because of that we need to rehydrate – it’s funny that we have a hard time drinking a one-liter bottle of water, but yet we could drink up to eight Guinness, nine Guinness which is more than a liter of water, or even an ‘elephant foot’ so to speak. So we want to ask people to be very careful during these holidays; safety is the number one priority. Wear your seatbelt all the time. Make sure you know the number for B.E.R.T. because that is very important, especially if you are on the highways – in Belize City, that is, the number is two-two-three-three-two-nine-two. If you call that number, you will have us direct and we will be able to respond immediately; if you call any other number it will take us a while to respond. So call us directly and you will have a good vacation, hopefully nothing will happen to you; you could always say BERT I made it well, thanks for the advice and look forward to another one, another time.”

“And no Easter for BERT – you take it after?”

Javier Canul

“(Laughs) Well, no Easter for BERT; we take it after.”

That number again is 223-3292.
