Tourists Reminded to be Careful, but Belize is Safe

In an interview with News Five, B.T.B.’s Karen Pike addressed the persistent reports of persons working inside the Tourist Village warning away cruise ship tourists from buying from vendors outside the village or even walking on Belize City streets due to fear of crime. Now while Belize City does have its crime hotspots, the old-world atmosphere of the Fort George area doesn’t come to mind. The Belize Tourism Board is working to change this view by preaching common sense about getting into dangerous situations, but also reassuring that Belize on a whole remains very safe for tourism.

“The Belize Tourism Board works with the Tourism Police Unit, and we work with industry partners and stakeholders as well in terms of coming up with a strategy to handle those kinds of challenges and complaints. It is an ongoing challenge but we are working with all the relevant players in that.”

“To a tourist who may watch this newscast tonight and be thinking of coming to Belize, perhaps this very weekend, how would you rate us of dealing with going onto the streets and interacting with Belizean people and not have to worry about getting your purse snatched or that kind of thing.”

Karen Pike

“We would encourage all tourists and visitors to be aware of their surroundings and be relatively cautious – anywhere they go, anywhere in the world actually, but especially here in Belize we would encourage that.”

    As long as the tourists stay out of the Lands office, they probably won’t get ripped off!

    Just came back from Belize. We loved the country and the people and had no problems at all. My wife and I walked to the bus station and took a bus to the zoo. Very easy, people were helpful and we enjoyed the ride. Of course, common sense is the phrase to consider, as well as walking with a purpose. We especially enjoyed a conversation with a gentleman from the kiosk called “Drums not Guns”.
    Keep going Belize. You have a great thing going on!

    Belize is not safe.

    Stay away Tourists.

    Also the BTB are racists who hate tourists but love the money they spend.

    Do not risk your life. Go to Mexico instead.

    @eye in the sky,
    look down not up in the sky see the reality, we are suppose to help better Belize but the way you express yourself chasing away the tourist who pay their expense not you have the right to chose to come to the Jewel or go to Mexico with the compadres.
    But if not keep watching up in the sky. Try to be positive.
