Domestic Dispute Leads to Chopping in Corozal

A Corozal family is grappling with an explosion of violence at their home over the weekend that has landed a husband and wife in hospital and her father in possible legal trouble. The allegation at its center, however, is that the husband, Gabriel Zelaya, continuously abused his wife, leading to her father, Armando Cobb, having to intervene.  Aaron Humes has the story from Corozal Town.

Aaron Humes, Reporting

When is enough, enough? For fifty-nine year old Armando Cobb of Zericote Street, Hall’s Layout, Corozal Town, it came Friday night, after finding out that his daughter had once again suffered violence at the hand of the man who said he loved her and fathered her four children – the oldest nineteen, the youngest just two years old. While they would not appear on camera, neighbours and relatives of those involved helped News Five piece together what happened between Cobb and his son-in-law, thirty-eight year old well-known mechanic Gabriel Zelaya around nine-fifteen on Friday night. The Zelayas were known in the neighbourhood for their violent fights and make-ups, but sometime earlier on Friday, Zelaya and his wife got into an altercation in which she ultimately suffered injuries to her ribs and jaw. The reason for the altercation is not known at this time. She was transported for treatment to the Corozal Community Hospital, where her father happened to be working on unrelated business at the time. News Five understands that Cobb spoke with his daughter at the hospital, while Police were waiting to take her statement. She told him that Zelaya was responsible for her injuries, prompting Cobb to allegedly tell Corozal Police that he would “deal with” Zelaya if Police did not apprehend him before he, Cobb, found him. And find him he did – at his own residence, just down the street from Zelaya’s residence and mechanic shop. The men argued and Zelaya allegedly denied causing injury to his wife; but Cobb did not buy it. He attacked with a machete and chopped the younger man in the back of the neck and right hand. Zelaya was first treated in Corozal and later at the Karl Heusner Memorial Hospital in Belize City from which he was discharged this afternoon. His wife is also seeking medical treatment at the K.H.M.H. Police say charges are pending. Aaron Humes reporting for News Five.”

Gabriel Zelaya’s children with his wife are staying with her family relatives.
