Foreign Affairs Minister Amends Comments on “Squatters”

Wilfred Elrington

The latest pronouncement by Minister of Foreign Affairs Wilfred Elrington on the definition of Belize’s territory and borders is predictably causing uproar. A few weeks ago he surprised reporters during a press conference with Secretary General of the Organization of American States, Luis Almagro, by pointing out that Belize’s borders are not internationally recognized, and then went on to compare Belize’s situation to gaining title to land by means of an extended occupation – what we colloquially know as “squatting.”  It remains Belizean law, adopted from England, that after a certain period possession of land is legalized solely by occupancy.  The Minister told us today that the practice is familiar enough in Belize that he thought people would get it, but the point remains the same – Belize’s possession defeats Guatemala’s intentions.

“It is just like you are on a piece of land all your life but you are a squatter. You can’t do anything with that land until you get it surveyed and get the survey agreed upon and you have a title to it. This is a process we are moving towards.”

Wilfred Elrington

“We got it by settling; it’s by settling. No other country has any title from God – do you know of any? We settled it, we occupied it, we get title to it. But people don’t know, and some of the people do know and want to make mischief. But I use the expression “squatter’s rights” because people understand that – all the people who go back there and squat on land after a time, and then they do go to Government and get title, or they go to court and get it. So I thought Belizeans would understand that readily; that’s the only reason I used the expression.”

Our ancestors were here long before they were no squatters. When we got our Independence from Great Britain we got our papers. How can this minister say that we are occupying land with out title?
That is the problem with these people. How can they represent us if they are on the enemy side?
This is why Belizeans do not trust this government in dealing with the Guatemalan claim.
