Investigation Concludes Into Incident Involving B.D.F. recruit

In early March, News Five aired the disturbing video of a training program involving a Belize Defense Force recruit.  The video that went viral may have captured multiple breaches in protocol so much so that it triggered an investigation. The images show the anguish and pain of recruit, now a soldier with the B.D.F., Michael Rivas, who had been tear-gassed and thrown in a trench. Even before the video was leaked to News Five, an inquiry was launched, which tonight we can confirm has been completed. Now, he is not known to shy away from the media, but B.D.F. Commander, Brigadier General David Jones has been rather mum about the incident. Today, he explained why.

“There was an investigation into the incident, it has been concluded yet, the findings haven’t been presented to me. So I won’t be able to make comments about it because I will have to try the person.”

Brig. Gen. David Jones

“No I have not.”

Andrea Polanco

“Is there are reason why you haven’t taken a look? Is it because you will be the…”

Brig. Gen. David Jones

“It’s only from the news, I’ve seen a bit from the news. But I won’t comment on what I have seen at all, because I have to try the case.”
