Official Opening of U.S. Army South’s “Beyond the Horizon”

Last week the U.S. Army South held a meeting with local partners to conclude their final plans for Beyond the Horizon 2017.  The project will see investments of over ten million U.S. dollars in different parts of the country. It is part of a bigger initiative where the U.S. offers humanitarian aid to Central American countries. The works for Beyond the Horizon started at the end of last month and will conclude mid-June. Today, they held the official launch. News Five’s Andrea Polanco went to Belmopan and has the details.

Beyond The Horizon 2017 was officially launched today in Belmopan. Government representatives and other officials gathered with representatives of the US Army, South and B.D.F. to do a ceremonial brick laying to open the initiative. For around ten years the US Army South has been doing projects Belize under “New Horizon” title but that has transitioned to “Beyond the Horizon” – a bigger initiative between the US and Belize.

“While the US Military has partnered with Belizean security forces and conducted numerous exercises in Belize, in the past, this is only the second Beyond the Horizon exercise that we have conducted here. This exercise, just like the state partnership programs, strengthens relationships and is based on trust and mutual support.”

“The exercises of the previous years that we benefited from were called new horizon, while the results of the previous years that we benefited from were similar, this time they are larger in scale. Beyond the Horizon 2017 is an initiative by both the US and Belize governments to assist in terms of construction and engineering projects, as well as to provide medical attention to some deserving Belizeans in the urban and rural area.”

The US Army South will be investing eleven point five million US dollars. The monies are being invested in five construction projects, from medical to school buildings, across the country. The 2017 initiative will also include three medical and dental services in Ladyville, Dangriga and San Ignacio.

“The total investment of approximately eleven point five million US dollars in building medical and education facilities, as well as providing medical services, will certainly benefit the people of this beloved country. We are proud to announce that this assistance will focus particularly on the following, for the Ministry of Health; it will focus on the expansion and improvement of the emergency room here at the western regional hospital. We will also have the construction of a new medical waste incinerator here at the western regional compound here the western regional compound. We will also have the construction of a brand new medical clinic here in Ladyville and we will have the construction of a new health center to replace the damaged clinic in Double Head Cabbage Village.”

Beyond The Horizon will see some two thousand volunteer soldiers of the US Army South on rotation.  It is set to bring in trained professionals in different fields; as a result, the B.D.F. is set to benefit from this collaboration.

John Saldivar

“The light engineering company of the B.D.F. is working alongside their American counterparts providing construction, labor, at all the various sites, and we appreciate the training opportunity that they are being afforded in partnering with the technical engineers of the national guards.”
