San Ignacio Plans Crime Vigil

There has been an upsurge in heinous crimes in the San Ignacio, Santa Elena area. Many are living in fear following the brutal death of a woman, whose dismembered and disemboweled body was found in the river near the Iguana Creek Bridge. And then most recently, the killing of a Baptist Pastor Florencio Guillermo Bardalez in Esperanza Village shocked residents and prompted a candlelight procession in the twin towns. The vigil, organized by Orlando Habet, Dan Silva and Michel Chebat, seeks to pool the public in a united stand against the high level of crime in the Cayo area.

“This candlelight procession was organized particularly for that purpose, to highlight what the citizens of the San Ignacio, Santa Elena area are living and to call to the attention of the authorities that something has to be done now. We are asking everyone to come out, we are asking the families of all the victims to come out. We are hoping that what will happen at the end of the day is that there will be a realization; there will be a new partnership between the police and the community they serve. I think the police has to understand that you cannot fight crime alone; you need the help of the citizens. And unless there is trust rebuilt between the police and the citizens, we are never going to have that again. I think by having the victim’s family come out and speak as to what their experiences are, by the leaders of the making a pact that they will work together with the police and so on, I think that we can make a change and that is the focus of this.”
