Watch Out for Fires and Hot Conditions

Ted Smith

Fire safety is of equal concern this holiday season.  Fire Chief Ted Smith provides useful tips for home and property owners during the Easter break, as well as the dry season.

Ted Smith, Fire Chief, National Fire Service

“During the Easter holidays we are fully aware that the temperatures and the wind are extremely hot, therefore the vegetation on the ground becomes pretty dry.  The risk of fires increases tremendously, therefore we want to sensitize the general public to put measures in place to reduce the likelihood of fires occurring, both for the dry season which usually extends from late February to end of May and sometimes into early June, as well as for the Easter holidays, the Easter break where people will be traveling, leaving their homes.  Some of these homes will be left unattended, therefore we encourage people, if you’re leaving for the Easter break, the Easter holiday kindly ensure that appliances that are not designed to stay on for extended periods of time are disconnected.  Your gas supply, your tanks are shut off.  Kindly close the valves.  Irons…ensure that they’re properly unplugged and safely stored or secured prior to leaving.  Also people who live out in the rural area, we want to encourage you as well to ensure to kindly keep your lawn extremely low during this period.”
