Drug Plane Recovered in Northern Belize

A small aircraft remains parked at the apron of the Philip Goldson International Airport after it was transported from northern Belize. The white with burgundy and sliver trim Piper PA-23-250 aircraft bearing tail number N6769Y landed up north on Monday, though the precise location has not been confirmed. Authorities in Guatemala tipped their local counterparts here about the suspicious plane which when inspected by Civil Aviation personnel, was found to be in good working condition therefore brought to the international airport. Now, it is known that this type of aircraft flies short distances and can accommodate up to six persons including the pilot. The anti-narcotics unit suspects that the plane was being used for illegal activities, meaning drug trafficking. No one was found in the area where the suspected drug plane originally landed.  Last November, another suspected drug plane landed in the La Democracia area of the Belize District. But by the time the Anti-Narcotics Unit and B.D.F. personnel arrived at the location, the pilot had removed the seats, loaded cargo presumably drugs, and flew away. Police also found twenty drums of aviation fuel, batteries, electrical wire and the seats.
