Kids Quizzed over Coastal Awareness

As part of the activities, today the Coastal Zone Authority held a trivia competition that saw the participation from schools across the city. The purpose is to raise awareness and the organizers say that the children demonstrated understanding and knowledge of the topics surrounding coastal zones and sustainability. At the end of the competition, Saint Luke’s Methodist took first place, while Holy Redeemer captured second and Saint Joseph rounded out the top three. News Five was at the Bliss today and spoke with the organizer.

“We had seven very intelligent students here today and they showcased the talent we have in Belize. And all the questions and study guide they followed they showcased today that they knew the material and the material was brought out through the questions and answer section.”

“When we think about coastal zones and the things impact it, we don’t normally, or we don’t immediately think that it would be something that students would interested in. How do you make it engaging and why do you engage students in things like this?”

Chad Bowman

“This is one of those techniques that you would call a soft technique; growing people to understand and educating them from a very young age – educating the wider public is more impactful than you trying to be retroactive; like later one when you have erosion you try to teach them about the coast and the resources and how to address everything. So, this is one of the activities that does as such for us. Also for this activity we use it as a platform to reach out to as much students, as much teachers. And hopefully in the future we can develop a technique that we could align with the syllabuses of students, so that students could learn more about coastal zone specifically.”

“So, they received prizes and plaques and so on?”

Chad Bowman

The second place winner went home with three hundred dollars and the third place winner went home with two hundred dollars cash and all the participants went home with a certificate and consolation prizes courtesy of Grace Kennedy.”
