Attorney Explains Why Chang Did Not Come Forward

Eric Chang

Outside, Chang consented to answer a few questions from the press. He reiterated that he was here to clear his name and that he felt that went well enough. But when asked if he felt he was believable, all he would say is that it was a matter of opinion and that he did the best he could. We put the question as to why he did not give a timely explanation to his then-boss, Mayor Darrell Bradley, and why he felt the need to shy away from the press. Attorney Arguelles jumped in to say that because the matter remains under investigation, discretion is the better part of valour.

“Sir, it appears that at least three of the five Senators did not accept the explanation you put forward to them; do you have concerns about that?”

Eric Chang, Former Deputy Mayor, Belize City

“That’s a matter of their opinion; I mean if they don’t believe me or don’t trust me, I ca’t do nothing much. I’m here to speak what I know, and the truth, which I did, I came; if they don’t believe me, there is nothing much that I can do.”

Emil Arguelles

“Sir, do you believe that you cleared your name today?”

Eric Chang

“Pretty much I believe. They accuse me that – which is Channel Seven; you guys say I am the carrier [of the Won Hong Kim passport]; I don’t see how. I’m a ‘chineyman’, I’m not Superman. How could I be in two places at the same time; I can’t be the carrier. And that’s the only thing I wanted to clear with the media; you guys have accused me for so long, now I have the opportunity to speak.”

“But you agree that this could have been settled a long time ago if you had said exactly what you said today to your bosses at the City Council and to us? We wouldn’t have turned you away.”

Emil Arguelles, Attorney for Eric Chang

“At the time, the matter was under investigation, and with respect to the media, this matter is still not completed yet; I would advise my client to remain silent until the Senate has said it is concluded as far as Eric is concerned.”

Chang said he would speak to his attorney about possible legal action against those he says have lied about him, but he is confident that he has nothing to fear from a criminal investigation. The Committee has the right to recall Chang and other witnesses as they deem necessary.
