Belmopan Mayor May Go for Re-Election; Says Party’s Troubles Will Not Affect Him

Khalid Belisle

On Thursday, Mayor Khalid Belisle launched the Belmopan City Council’s municipal bond for six point five million dollars – a venture he hopes will help to cement his place in the Capital City, especially as the Municipal Elections approach in 2018. Belisle also answered questions about his party’s purported involvement in corruption – particularly as it relates to the immigration scandals. Interestingly, Belisle indicated that he has intentions to offer himself as a candidate for the U.D.P. and that he is fairly confident that the wrongdoings will not taint his candidacy.

“Now, sir, you were elected under the U.D.P. slate. You intend to offer yourself again under another U.D.P. slate?”

Khalid Belisle, Mayor, Belmopan
“If I were to, yes, if my name is on the ballot next March, it will be under the United Democratic Party.”

“Now, sir, at the current moment the ruling U.D.P. government is under pressure due to the immigration matter and a lot has been revealed. It shows scandals and corruption within the government administration. No specific names have been pointed to – that this one did something or that one did something, but the impression is certainly left; You as a young politician, does it affect you in trying to win the confidence of persons, let’s say for example something like a business venture like this – the municipal bond – where your party is under fire for integrity and you have to distinguish yourself as a politician?”

Khalid Belisle

“I mean, I’ll be frank with you, Daniel, I am a proud member of the United Democratic Party. Have mistakes been made along the way? Certainly. By other members of the party? Certainly. I don’t think anybody has ran from that –I’ll readily acknowledge that, but there is that little saying that all politics is local and I believe for the most part here in Belmopan in terms of our team and what we have done in terms of keeping in touch with people, in terms of trying to participate in community activities, in terms of trying to support those activities that the community puts together from time to time, that we have done a fairly good there. I don’t want to say that we are insulated from the wider perception of what’s been happening since the U.D.P. assumed office as the national government, but here in Belmopan I think we have a very intelligent and fairly reason-minded population who can be able to separate one from the other. Not that the national government hasn’t poured resources in Belmopan, I can tell you that we have benefitted from close to 10 million dollars if not more. If you look at the stadium right across the road from us – Petrocaribe – whatever you think of it has benefitted this city tremendously. I think I would be satisfied with stopping there for now.”

“Sir, has there ever been a point in which you felt embarrassed or you had issues identifying yourself with the U.D.P. when certain things have been revealed?”

Khalid Belisle

“In the aggregate, I could never say that I have been embarrassed. Have I wish that certain haven’t transpired? Certainly. But, like I said, in the grander picture I have been very proud to associate myself with the leadership of the Right Honorable Dean Barrow since he assumed office as the Prime Minister of this country.”
