Two Murders in Cayo Bear Stamp of Drugs and Gangs

Alvaro Aldana

Two men were killed in less than twelve hours in San Ignacio – but are they connected? One man was killed as he and his common-law walked in a park and the other was found shot to death on a dirt road. So far, police have identified one of the men – he is a twenty-three-year-old alleged to be a drug trafficker in that western municipality – but the other’s identity remains unknown at this time. News Five’s Andrea Polanco has the story:

Andrea Polanco, Reporting

Just before midnight on Sunday, shots rang out behind PK Store in San Ignacio Town. Twenty-three-year-old Alvaro Aldana was murdered as he walked through the park with his common-law wife.  According to police, a gunman walked up to the couple and opened fire on Aldana shortly after he told his wife to run for help. The alleged well-known drug trafficker of Kontiki Area was stabbed to the back and shot twice to the face and body.

Insp. Fitzroy Yearwood, Press Officer, Belize Police Department

“Police responded to shots being fired behind PK Store somewhere in San Ignacio. When they responded, they found a young man Alvaro Aldana, twenty-three years who was walking through the park with his common-law. They were approached by a gunman; Aldana advised the common-law to run. Fearing for her life, the common-law is saying that when she ran away, she heard shots fired. But did not turn back; she went and looked for help. Apparently when Aldana was transported to the San Ignacio Hospital he was seen with a gunshot wound under the left eye; he had stab wound to the back. And he succumbed to his injuries; he was pronounced dead by a medical office.”

Within hours, by six o’clock this morning, the lifeless body of an unidentified man was discovered on First Street in San Ignacio. News Five understands that the body was found with a bag with the markings “Taylor’s Alley Gang”. According to police, there is evidence to suggest that victim number two was the shooter—and dare say assassin—in the murder of Aldana.

Insp. Fitzroy Yearwood

“Our latest victim that police discovered around six a.m. this morning. And based on the way that person was dressed when he was found; it would suggest that he might be the suspect for the murder that took place earlier…well last night. We have to try to identify him first. Now that we have an area to look, now we can show his pictures to them and see if we can get a true identity of that person. But like you rightfully mentioned, it is being suggested, being on the description of clothing; that this might be the same person.”

Duane Moody

“So the shooter in the case of Mister Aldana was then murdered?”

Insp. Fitzroy Yearwood

“We can’t say a hundred percent, but we are suspecting.”

Police are now seeking assistance from the public to solve these murders in the west.

Insp. Fitzroy Yearwood

“We are asking the public assistance in coming forward to help us in investigating these crimes, especially this one in particular. We cannot say what is the motive; if it is robbery at this time. As soon as the investigators find out, we can share it with you.”
