Police Hand Out Big-Time Awards
Police Officers, Civilian Staff of the Department and community members were recognized today by the Belize Police Department. Over one hundred officers received awards in different categories as a part of the work they did in 2016. News Five spoke with Compol Allen Whylie who told us why these awards matter to the Police Department:
Allen Whylie, Commissioner of Police
“Today we are having the annual awards ceremony for the Eastern Division. As you know, Belize District has been broken down into three divisions; Eastern Division South, Eastern Division North, Eastern Division Rural. And so, a committee was put together by the various eastern division commanders and from that committee they have nominated a little over a hundred and forty officers who will be given various awards for outstanding policing service during 2016. The award ceremony is basically for the Police Department to give recognition for the outstanding work that the officers have done in terms of the service to the communities in the areas of crime prevention, arrest, most entries, and those sort of things. So, it works as a morale or motivation factors for the officers and it also encourage the other officers who were not recognized because we cannot recognize the entire two thousand officers. But it encourages them to try to reach that level to be recognized by their peers and superiors.”
Why is it that we only see the commissioner when there is “good news” and when there is news on immigration wrongdoings, passport investigations, minister involvment in illegal activities, low conviction rates, high crime, murders,…….nothing, zilch……..?
