Que Pasa, PASA? Nada, Says City Mayor

It has been more than a month since PASA informed the Solid Waste Management Authority that they would not be carrying out anymore works at the transfer stations and the regional sanitary land fill at mile twenty-four. While this is a matter between Central Government through the Solid Waste Management Authority and PASA, the Belize City Council has been kept abreast of the developments and so when we caught up with Mayor Darrell Bradley today we asked him if this ongoing issue has affected city residents.

“We are continuing to monitor the situation. I had indicated this from members of the community. One of the important things for us is that there is no interruption in the collection and proper disposal of garbage from the City’s point of view. And we have thus farhad no interruptions. So that our, of course, the solid waste manage project is a central government implemented project. Our point of interest is to ensure that individual residents of the City do not suffer the inconvenience or the interruption of collection of garbage and that is where we are engaging with our private collector and we are engaging with the solid waste management authority in relation to what is going on. And we, from our point, are ensuring there is no interruption and thus far there has not been any.”

“So, there hasn’t been any back up out there?”

“There hasn’t been any backup. We have assisted in terms of the leveling of the area; because of course we had some problems when we had Hurricane Earl when we were just dumping a significant amount of garbage as a result of the cleanup efforts. So, that we did assistance in relation to ensuring that is leveled but beyond that there has been no back-log or back up.”
