Personal Attack a Smokescreen for National Problems

Eamon Courtenay

But when all is said and done is the senator being used as a scapegoat to deflect from the major financial problems of the country, including a proposed increase in taxes that is to come in the new budget?  Courtenay says that the people must not be distracted from the real issues the country is facing.

Eamon Courtenay, Lead P.U.P. Senator

“I think you hit the nail on the head. Let’s stop and ask ourselves what this is all about. Let’s assume for example that I were to not represent Michael Ashcroft, you think Michael Ashcroft would stop? You really think that if I am not representing Michael Ashcroft, he will say oh my god Mister Courtenay is not representing me; I better go home, because I can’t collect this? Believe me, Michael Ashcroft is the most tenacious litigator I have ever come across in my professional life and I don’t believe for a second that it is because of me that he is able to do the litigation. The litigation would continue. The point is this, as you highlight, we have a government that is about to tax the Belizean people again. We have a government that is the most corrupt on history. Look at the land transactions in this country and nobody has collected the money. Look at how ministers have enriched themselves. We have proof, proof, of electoral fraud by the government of Belize. We are compiling the list to show Belizeans all those people who were unlawfully and illegally made Belizean citizens who are now on the voters roll. That is something that the government is trying to distract Belizeans from and I can tell you that the P.U.P. is on the path to ensure that the people remain focus on the real issues that are at hand. And that has to do with jobs, it has to do with the quality of living, it has to do with the incredible deficit and debt that the country is in because of the United Democratic Party. Those are the issues that Belizeans are interested in, those are the issues that affect Belizeans and those are the issues that we should be talking about rather than some personal, vulgar, nasty name calling by the U.D.P. against me.”
