Re-Registration Now, Demands Belize Progressive Party

Paco Smith

Last week the People’s United Party complained of Government’s plans to postpone re-registration once again, this time to after the 2018 municipal elections. However, there are plans to proceed with re-districting of electoral boundaries. The Belize Progressive Party, the youngest of Belize’s political movements, blames both parties for putting the matter off when it suited them, and now says that for the good of the country, re-registration must be held before new boundaries are drawn – in fact, as soon as possible. We spoke to its chairman, Paco Smith.

Paco Smith, Chairman, Belize Progressive Party

“The powers that be can always draw upon the cost issue, given the dismal economic and financial times that Belize finds itself in; but if you are committed to good governance principles and practices being the rule as opposed to the exception, then it is incumbent upon them to do the right thing. The right thing is to conduct this exercise, because one of the things we recognize is that administrations or political parties that are in positions of influence at the time can find monies to do things when they so seek; and it just goes to show, at least based on our assessment, where the element of good governance principles and practices in regards to this particular exercise stands in terms of those who are in positions of authority.”

“Now what is the B.P.P. doing to raise the groundswell for re-registration, for re-districting of electoral boundaries?”

Paco Smith

“First and foremost – I’m glad you brought up the two of them – but the fundamental one that we are looking at at this time is re-registration, that is important. Because if you do the re-registration first, number one that is the most important means by which to ensure that the lists are clean and then you can think about re-districting.”
