Don’t Believe Government ‘Spin’ on Arbitration, B.P.P. Warns

Paco Smith

When we caught up with the Progressive Party chairman Paco Smith today, he also weighed in on Belize’s current troubles with the various arbitration awards under dispute here and in the United States. Like most, Smith believes the issue could have been resolved much earlier. That it can’t, he says, must keep Belizeans vigilant and alert as we will suffer the consequences for the Government’s missteps.

“Belize finds itself in an untenable situation with regard to these external debts which have been accrued; some of these monies could have been curtailed, so to speak, had other actions been taken by the powers that be. So we’re taking it all in stride – definitely we are not pleased – and we want Belizeans to understand the depth of this situation. Things may appear okay right now, but there are repercussions that this country will inevitably feel for many years to come. So our stance is pretty much straightforward: that the bottom-line is we need to remain attuned in regards to all of the goings-on and not to listen to the singular narrative or the local spin that has been put on certain things by the Government, because we have to understand that we operate in a globalized reality.”
