Former Treasury Clerk to be Tried for Theft from Government

David Enriquez

Thirty-nine-year-old David Enriquez, a former clerk at the Treasury Department, will stand trial for three counts of theft after being charged in connection with the embezzlement of over four hundred thousand dollars from the Government of Belize.  The matter dates back to 2014, when it was alleged that on three occasions Enriquez stole sums of money totaling the said amount.  This morning, he appeared before Chief Magistrate Anne Marie Smith in the presence of attorney Oscar Selgado.  Prosecutor Egbert Castillo submitted as many as ten statements from witnesses, along with nine pieces of documentary evidence that will be used against Enriquez in subsequent proceedings.  He was then informed that a prima facie case had been established against him and that he will stand trial at the next sitting of the Supreme Court in April.  David Enriquez is presently out on bail.
