Belize Drops Second Straight Game to El Salvador, 3 to 1

The fate of Belize’s Gold Cup future is up in the air after losing to El Salvador in their third outing of the Central American Cup.  While Honduras is the only team with a perfect record at the 2017 Copa Centroamericana, Belize is in danger of sinking lower on that list.  This afternoon in Panama City, the Jaguars struggled to keep El Salvador at bay, but were unsuccessful in their attempt to get an edge over the competition.  The team was stunned during the first half of the game when three goals were scored back-to-back-to-back on goalkeeper Woodrow West.  Belize’s lone goal would come shortly before the end of the half by Deon McCauley.  News Five’s Isani Cayetano has a recap of today’s game.

The Belize Jaguars, away in Panama where they are participating in the Central American Cup, suffered a major loss earlier today to El Salvador.  The three-one defeat saw goalkeeper Woodrow West being caught flatfooted in succession within the first half of game play.  The first goal was scored by number fifteen, Gerson Mayen, who banked with a crucial header past an unsuspecting keeper.  Next up was Juan Barahona who delivered a monster left footer into the right corner of the net to put El Salvador up by a pair of goals.  And if that wasn’t enough for first half play, another header would come whistling into the net by Henry Romero.  Closing out the first half, Belize’s super striker Deon McCauley would beat El Salvador’s goalkeeper to send home the Jaguars’ lone score during their third match.

Here’s a quick look at the highlights of the Belize/El Salvador match.

Coming into this afternoon’s game, Belize was ranked fifth in the tournament.  Its standing has been further jeopardized by the loss to El Salvador. Reporting for News Five, I am Isani Cayetano.
