Ex-Immigration Chief Says it’s Time to “Walk the Talk”

Accompanying each section of the Immigration Audit Report is a list of recommendations from the auditors. While quite a few have been mentioned before, the political wherewithal to follow through has largely been absent. And former Director Maria Marin, who has moved to head up the refugee program, had some sharp words for both her former colleagues and the political directorate when asked whether she agreed with the recommendations provided by the Audit Department. Marin said that it is time to give Immigration proper support and backing – in her words, “walk the talk.”

Mark Lizarraga, Senator, Business Community

“I note that for the most part, except for one or two little quirky questions, let’s say that – you have agreed with the recommendations of the Auditor General, is that correct?”

“Is there anything else that you would like to add?”

Maria Marin

“I would really like to add that there is a sincere desire to address the issues of the Department. For too long it has been going on and on, and for too long we have talked the talk; but for too long we have not walked that talk. And I think, I believe, that if we really love this country, that we need to walk that talk: from the very top to the very bottom. Because even if you have genuine people, it is difficult for genuine people to function when that support is not there, when it doesn’t exist; or where the support is half-met; ‘Oh, we’re gonna do this,’ and then, we don’t finalize that process, and we don’t commit to seeing it from the beginning to the end, despite the fact that the work is getting done by those who really want to see a difference.”

Marin concluded her testimony at four this afternoon. We understand that another witness will be called for the next scheduled hearing.
