Government Swears It Will Not Pay “Ashcroft Awards”

The U.S. Supreme Court on Monday refused to hear the cases of the Government against Belize Social Development Limited, Caribbean Investment Holdings Limited (formerly BCB Holdings Limited) and Newco Limited, upholding prior judgments by courts in Washington, D.C.  The government now owes over a hundred million dollars to these three companies, but says it will not pay. In its press release issued today, the Government throws down a gauntlet, stating that the U.S. courts, “have no authority to overrule the C.C.J. and certainly the Ashcroft companies can never collect on those awards in Belize. Accordingly, the Government of Belize under the current administration, refuses to subject the Belizean people to this monstrosity of the P.U.P.’s making, and has no intention of paying a penny of these Ashcroft awards.” The major political parties traded blame and insults back and forth in their press releases issued on Tuesday and earlier today. The People’s United Party release blames the Prime Minister’s arrogance and incompetence that has led to a negative impact on the economy which will affect generations to come. However, the Government points blame right back at the former P.U.P. administration, stating that the awards are not enforceable in Belize since the Caribbean Court of Justice has ruled that the original agreements, the Settlement Deed with BCB/Caribbean Investment and the Accommodation Agreement with B.S.D.L. are “scandalous, outrageous and utterly illegal.”
