G.O.B. Cancels Consultations on Seismic Testing

The Marine Multibeam and Sea Seep Survey consultations have been cancelled. In a rather brief three line – one sentence – press release issued today by the Government Press Office, the Ministry of Economic Development and Petroleum informed the public that the consultations scheduled for the eighteenth and twenty-fifth of this month have been cancelled. No reasons were given why the consultations were called off – and neither does the release state if the survey will still take place.  In a release issued earlier today, The Coalition to Save our Natural Heritage was quick to respond calling on Government to ban offshore oil drilling from any of Belize’s waters as this is obviously not in the interest of the country’s sustainable development agenda or climate change adaptation plans. The Coalition also expressed concern over  those now cancelled consultations because it says it is unclear how public input will be utilized; whether survey ships have already been scheduled to enter Belizean waters and how two meetings in Belize City at night suffices as consultations for an issue of national importance.
