UNIBAM’s Caleb Orozco Questions Consultative Process

Valdemar Andrade

Gay rights activist Caleb Orozco, executive director of UNIBAM, has raised several issues concerning the process being used by the Thirteenth Senator Steering Committee in going about the selection of the remaining parliamentarian.  In fact, he points out that the panel should be proactive in its approach to reach out to other nongovernmental organizations, regardless of their present standing.  Those concerns have been duly noted and today former nominee Valdemar Andrade acknowledged Orozco’s concern and supported the position.

Valdemar Andrade, Executive Director, TASA

“I think Caleb is right in saying that there has to be a reaching out to the other organizations.  I think we can use technology to do that today, if we get everybody, you know, at least informed and ensure that they know what the process is and also what the decisions are because at the end of the day no senator or no one person that is elected can do the amount of work that it will take to get the work done properly.  It will have to be people with multiple discipline background to be able to advise anybody that’s going to be there to do the work. Whoever goes there as the thirteenth senator certainly while the voting has to be done with some kind of filter that allows people to know that the organizations that are going to vote are in good standing, it doesn’t detract from the work that the other N.G.O.s that are not in good standings are doing.  There are many N.G.O.s out there that the issue for good standing is simply because the affordability of an audit or the timing of the audit, it doesn’t mean that they don’t have their audit in process or are in the process of getting good standing but good standing is a process.  And so, at the end of the day whoever the thirteenth senator is and the committee that supports the thirteenth senator has to have an avenue to reach out to the rest of the N.G.O. community that are doing good work to ensure that we are capturing again what are the most important issues for our society.”

We will have more coverage of the remaining candidates in Friday’s newscast.
