Police Minister Plans New Effort on Surveillance Cameras

Elodio Aragon Jr.

You may recall that a few years back the Police Department installed surveillance cameras in key spots on south side Belize City; at the corner of George and Dean Streets; including the corner of Kraal Road and Haynes Street; Foot of the Pound Yard Bridge and  BelCan Roundabout. From what we have gathered, none of the cameras are currently working and from a while back some of them were either not turned on or monitored. The last we had heard was that the technologies of the cameras were “antiquated” and they had to be switched to digital recording. But even so, the cameras would go down from time to time and it was difficult to source parts. The hope was that the cameras would be useful in solving crimes on the south side, particularly where there were no “eye-witnesses” – but with the report that none of the cameras now working – there’s not much to be said for that end of it.  In an interview on Wednesday, Minister of Police Elodio Aragon Junior told us that there is plan to get proper working cameras and that all efforts will be put into monitor and maintenance.

Elodio Aragon Jr., Minister of Police

“Well, you know, with everything that we do, we must have a comprehensive plan. We can’t put up cameras and don’t prepare a room – personnel to monitor these things. We have to plan properly. Right now, I am not aware how many cameras are working. I know from when I was working there we had about four – a couple cameras working. The situation right now, I know with CABEI funding, we will be doing something in terms of cameras and likewise in terms of involves getting the support from the community in terms of cameras. But, like I said, these are some of the things we will unveil to you all later. But definitely, we have to put in a proper plan. It is not only about spending money and getting the technology and putting it out there, It is about ensuring we can maintain; being able to monitor; and to put them to good use. And these are the kinds of things we want to ensure is being done to get value for money.”
