No Cause of Death for Male Fetus in Benque

In another update…What killed a seventeen-week-old fetus found wrapped in a plastic bag and stashed inside a large coffee bottle and laid to rest along the quiet banks of the Mopan River on New Years’ Eve? A post-mortem examination was scheduled for Wednesday in San Ignacio to determine cause of death. But it could not determine the cause of death of the baby boy. As deputy officer in charge of Benque Viejo Police, Inspector Stanley Bowden told News Five on Tuesday, it is a criminal offence to dispose of a fetus in this manner.

“Other than the fact that it is not safe to dispose of a baby that way – a fetus that way – are there any criminal charges attached to an act like this, again not prejudging anything?”

“Yes, it is a criminal offence. Of course, the investigation is still in the infancy stage. We will have to continue to conduct our investigation, a file will be compiled and later on sent to the Director of Public Prosecutions. But definitely, if we come across the mother, we will await a directive from the D.P.P. when that time comes. But it is a criminal offence.”

According to Inspector Bowden, there was no sign of injury to the fetus or any blood or other suspicious items in the immediate area of the discovery.
