Rural All Stars triumph in football

Story Picture
Good evening, I’m James Adderley and you’re locked into your first taste of Sports Monday for the year 2004. Week five of the B.P.F.L.’s B League brought the Corozal Southwest Strikers to the Sandhill Field where they were hosted by the Belize Rural All Stars.

In the opening minutes Zair Witz gets a look at goal but comes up with too much of the pitch to be effective. Down field Darwin Inez comes up with a timely save to keep his team from facing an early deficit. Off this corner kick from Eden “Yellowman” Rawley, Sylvian Lyons gets a header to the pill, but it’s not enough to do any damage.

On this press, Tyrone Muschamp attacks from the left side, goalkeeper Benancio Sutherland cannot control and Sylvian Lyons picks up the loose ball and Rural takes a 1-zip lead just like that.

The Southwest Strikers from Corozal look to respond immediately; unfortunately Zair Witz squanders this open look from point-blank range. Amin Marizanero then fires this good-looking long distance screamer that just inches over the crossbar.

Now can you believe this? Goleador Jermaine Zuniga steals the ball, beats the keeper and then misses an empty goal. But at the half Rural All Stars still show a 1-zip lead.

In second half play the Stars come out shining immediately. This spotkick is misplaced by the Corozal defence, which allows Orland Lyons to get a head on the ball as the lead doubles.

Make it two goals for Orland Lyons when Jermaine Zuniga sets it up in the air and again the header smashes through. And yes, Yellowman Rawley, we know how this ball takes a sudden bounce okay.

The Stars make a 4-nil game when Henry Gillett forces this outside push into an open goal as Corozal begins to crumble. Meanwhile, it’s Zuniga on the attack. When he gets taken down inside the eighteen the referee rules penalty. Jermaine Zuniga decides to take it himself and he gives Rural a 5-zip lead.

Nevertheless folks, Eden Rawley beats the keeper and sets table for Jermaine Zuniga who makes it look easy as he scores his second of the goal of the match to make it 6-nil.

When play resumes, Corozal goes on the offence only to see Rayon Brooks give them an unnecessary penalty. Zair Witz steps up and has Charles Flores jumping the wrong way as Corozal picks up the consolation goal in the 6-1 loss.

In other scores from around the league, Ladyville doubled Delta Sport 4-2, Yabra United and Lazio battled to a 1-1 tie, A.F. Club dispersed Youth for the Future 4-2, while A.C. Milan edged Hattieville 2-1.

Meanwhile in closing, we want to take a quick peek at two of the New Year’s Day horse race at Burrell Boom. Here’s the five furlong thoroughbred sprint as it rounds the final curve–Express is on the pace as Ramada Star tries to challenge, but Express from Carr Stables just streaks in to win easily. Ramada Star is second and International pulls in third.

In the big time Santiago Castillo Cup race, it’s three of the best in the business, but Bradley’s Tesoro is able to ward off a strong challenge from Pacesetter to grab the three thousand, eight hundred dollars in prize money, while Alize is forced into a disappointing third place.

That’s it for now, we invite you back same time, same place, next week. Jah over all! I’m James Adderley.
