Sports Council Director Calls on Sporting Associations to Step Up

The event today saw the participation of many sporting associations and their respective athletes. But for years now, the criticism is that enough funding has not been made available for local athletes to hone their skills, giving them a better opportunity to advance in international competitions. National Sports Council Director, Ritchel Dominguez, told News Five today that together with the various sporting associations, a renewed focus has to be made on athletes.

“Sometimes we look at sports in Belize and say that it is not going anywhere so we need to encourage them to start in this way and working with the Sports Council and working with associations that we can move sports in Belize. Sports need to get back to where it needs to be in Belize.”

“That’s an interesting comment because a lot of people are of the opinion and we have seen it where more emphasis has to be placed on sports, on the athletes that we have. Could you talk to us about that? I know you’ve done a lot of work since you took over at the National Sports Council, what kind of efforts can we see put into our athletes to ensure that they have that fighting chance to represent us at these international competitions?”

Ritchel Dominguez

“Well if you look at it, the Sports Council is basically the arm, the governing body for associations. Associations are registered under us; the associations carry out the activities with the athletes and we in turn are that support so that we can help them and guide them. And I believe the association is where it lies and the government and the Sports Council is really the drive to say here is where we need to go, there is where we need to go, this is what we need to do because the associations will bring back what they need to us and then we can work together in moving sports forward. I think sports need to go somewhere quick in the next year or two so that we can start looking at good athletes coming out of Belize. We have the gift, we just need to shub it a little bit more.”
