Wait Continues for Refurbished Commercial Center
Vendors departed from the Commercial Center in downtown Belize City a few months ago in advance of plans for a major project intended to spruce it up and give it a modern look to match a modern City. The renovations are part of the Downtown and House of Culture project where the latter is converted into a colonial museum and City Hall gains space for a museum of Belize City history. There are even plans to integrate the further waterfront area from Seashore Drive to Yarborough Green. But the Commercial Center, in the heart of it all, has barely been touched and Mayor Darrell Bradley gave us the reason why today.
Darrell Bradley, Mayor of Belize City
“The project has been delayed because there are certain technical difficulties in terms of our ability to source counterpart funding for the Commercial Center renovations and some of the designs and so forth, but when that project is finished that’s going to be a major boost to downtown Belize City.”

“When do you expect things to get back underway there?”
Darrell Bradley
“It is underway to the extent that works are going on at the House of Culture; there is a significant amount of involvement in the community. We’ve already done the designs and the planning for the Commercial Center; the only thing that’s caused the delay in starting the Commercial Center is our ability to source our counterpart funding.”
